We, the members of the Centennial Committee, have brought together
as many of the memories, the ideals, the aspirations of the church as we
could gather. It is our hope that you will relive yesterday, experience today
-- then help us build tomorrow. We acknowledge with deep appreciation
the work and time given by all of the committees involved.

HISTORICAL FACTS
of

First Baptist Church
of

Charlotte, North Carolina

First Baptist Church of Charlotte, North Carolina, with God as its pilot has an illustrious chronicle as the first
Negro Baptist Church of Charlotte. The N. C. Baptist State Convention of 1850 made it mandatory for slaves to
be provided places for worship and religious instruction. At one time the membership was nine hundred as quoted
in the Charlotte News Textile Industrial Edition. From this beginning there was an outgrowth of other churches.

Of the four hundred thousand Negro Baptists in America at the end of the Civil War, sixty -six (some docu-
ments state fifty -five) brave Christians, who were formerly associated with First Baptist Church now located on
North Tryon Street, were granted letters to form their own church in June 1867. Alfred Jones, Deacon of the
colored members was instrumental in recommending the first members. Rev. E. H. Griffith and Rev. Hinton
helped with the organization. The places of worship were "Yankee" Hospital near the site of the present YMCA
Building on Morehead Street and South Boulevard and the present location which was purchased in 1870.

The Sunday School Annex is the site of the first church, a frame structure. In 1901 the new edifice was
begun. Much of the labor was done by the members after their daily work. Lanterns were held by the women
of the church while the men did the manual part of the great project started under Dr. C. C. Somerville and
completed under Dr. P. S. Lewis. Often the women brought food for those who did not have the opportunity of
eating before coming to work. Some of the known deceased helpers were Brother Dave and Sister Mary Jane
Hampton, the parents of Mrs. Sarah Diamond; Sister Mary Mayo; Sister Celia Emmons, the mother of Mrs.
Minnie Jackson; Sister Nellie Gray, the mother of Mrs. Gillie Lane; Brother Grant and Sister Sally Wallace, the
parents  of  Mrs.  Eva  Wallace  Miller;  Brother  Noah  and  Sister  Mary  French;  Sisters  Priscilla  and  Harriette  Diamond;
Brother Grief and Sister Lucy Friday; Brother John and Sister Mary Lucky; and Sister Lillian Cruse Graves. The
formal dedication of our present church was held the week of September 17-23, 1911.

Myrtle Settlemire was the first child to be baptized in the new church. At the fifty -fifth anniversary, in
1951, Sisters Mary Mayo and Mary J. Hampton were the only ones of the first group living.

Leadership has been efficient and dynamic. Until Rev. E. E. Eagles of Wilmington, North Carolina, was
elected as the first pastor, the church was served by supply pastors -- Rev. Bill Bowser, Rev. Bert Taylor, and
Rev. Horton. Eleven other ministers have served well this church, state, and country -- Rev. A. A. Powell,
Rev. Augustus E. Shepard (1897-1898), Dr. C. C. Somerville (1899-1906), Dr. P. S. Lewis (1906-1920), Rev.
H. H. Mitchell (1920-1922), Dr. J. H. Moore (1923-1925), Rev. H. M. Smith (1925-1927), Rev. Walter A. Tutt
(1927-1929), Rev. L. C. Huff (1930-1932), Dr. J. H. Moore (second pastorate (1933-1946), Dr. J. B. Humphrey
(1947- ).

In addition to the outstanding leadership the church as had in its ministers, the church has also always
been blessed with deacons who supported the ministers and gave lay leadership for the congregation. During
the depression years, some of these deacons went the "extra mile" to personally endorse loans and to make
personal loans to the church in order to save the property of the church.

Although the records of the church do not give the year that the deacons were ordained or when they came
here as deacons from other churches, a list has been compiled of past deacons who have served this church
faithfully. The past deacons are: Walter Alexander, William Anderson, Homer Bonner, J. S. Bratton, William
Bratton (California), Daniel Brown, Lewis T. Christmas (clerk), H. C. Cogwell, H. C. Dockery, James Emmons,
Thomas Foster, Lawson Fox, Griefus Friday, Noah P. French, Stephen Gray, Dave Hampton, Alfred Hayes, Robert
Harris, William Hawkins, W. H. Holman, Joe Howey, Sr., J. Ellis Hunter, Ezekiel Irvin, George W. James, J. H.
Johnson, Alfred Jones, J. C. Knight, Thomas Knight, Zachariah Lacy, James Lemly, W. C. Lucky, William
Mills, W. B. "Billy" Morris, G. W. McClelland, J. H. Perrin, Edgar J. Phillips (clerk), Shelton Prator, Boyd Robin-
son, Milas Smart, James Strong, Henry Torrence, Ephriam Twitty, and John Watkins.

Many organizations and events motivated the spiritual growth of this church. Mr. Grief Friday was the
first Sunday School superintendent. The Sunday School with Mr. W. B. "Billy" Morris was known in the com-
munity and state. Long have the Sunday School classes (Mrs. Hester French's Cradle Roll and Mrs. Minnie
Jackson's class of boys named Phi lemath eons), teachers, excursions and picnics have been remembered and
cherished. Ten others have served with distinction -- Mr. George Gaffney, Mr. E. J. Young, Dr. Henry Graves,
Mrs. Mamie Phipher Paisley, Mr. J. C. Knight, Mr. James Wertz, Mr. J. Ellis Hunter, Mr. P. A. Connor, and Mr.
Harry Mills. The Ladies Aid was organized June 19, 1907, and for many years contributed to the church. Mrs.
Ellen Henderson was the first president. Other initial officers were Mrs. Lillie McArthur, vice-president; Mrs.
Sarah Diamond, secretary; Mrs. Nannie Woodruff, assistant secretary; Mrs. Daisy McClelland, treasurer. Charter
members were Mrs. Emma Alexander, Mrs. Mary Lizzie Jones, Mrs. Bessie Twitty, Mrs. Clara Cathey, Mrs.
Bertha Beatty, Mrs. Katie Crone, Mrs. Isabella Green, Mrs. Lillie Justice, Mrs. Mary Cook, Mrs. Sally Cantey,
Mrs. Clara Wertz, Mrs. Effie Holman, Mrs. Mary Lucky, Mrs. Lula Pope, and Mrs. Tessie Settlemyre. This
organization has had as presidents after its birth Mrs. Lillie McArthur, Mrs. Daisy McClellan, Mrs. Clara Wertz,
Mrs. Emma Alexander, Mrs. Minnie Jackson and Mrs. Hattie Robinson Bratton. Mrs. C. C. Somerville was the
first president of the First Baptist Missionary Circle. Some other presidents were Mrs. Naomi Phifer, Miss Fannie
Jordan, Mrs. Eliza Moore (wife of Dr. J. H. Moore), Mrs. Gillie Lane, Miss Captola Wilson, Mrs. Mary E. Hum-
phrey (wife of Dr. J. B. Humphrey), Mrs. Servilla Simmons, and at present, Mrs. Quessie Brown. All were
influential in the growth of missions at First Baptist. The Baptist Young Peoples Training Union, now the
Baptist Training Union, gave special spiritual guidance to youth. The Ushers Board was reorganized in 1926
under the ministry of Rev. Walter A. Tutt, with the following members: Mrs. Lillie Justice (president). Miss
Bertha Nance, Miss Lillie May Joyner, Miss Fannie Williams, Mrs. Minnie Cochran, Mrs. Quessie D. Brown, Mr.
Homer Bonner, Mr. E. J. Hunter, Mr. Boyd Robinson, and Mr. Beacher Perry. The Pastors Aid, The Friendly
Circle, The Willing Workers, and The Good Will Club share in the progress of the church. The Sunshine Band
was organized by Mrs. Lillie Justice. The Captola Wilson Bible Class was begun by Miss Captola Wilson.

Music has been a source of inspiration. Many services have been rendered as pianists, organists (Mrs.
Millie Johnson, Mrs. Alberta Knight, Mrs. Thelma Graves Campbell, Mrs. Mildred Knight Jones, Mr. Kenneth
Diamond, Mr. William Lane, Mr. Samuel A. Moore, Miss Delores Dwiggins, Mrs. Mary Stanback, and Miss
Anita Thornton), Choristers, and choir members. Clerks and many secretaries have helped communicate and
record -- Mr. E. J. Phillips, Mr. L. T. Christmas, Mr. John H. Moore, Mr. Kenneth Diamond, Mr. P. A. Connor,
Mr. Russell Lewis, Dr. Wilkins Davis, Mr. Junius Diamond, and Mrs. Mildred Graves Fite.

Many of the schools after 1865, were connected with the church. First Baptist contributed to the community
with Wharton Normal Institute.

Rowan Normal and Industrial School was due to Dr. C. C. Somerville when he was pastor of First Baptist
Church and Moderator of the Rowan Baptist Association. This school was later moved to Salisbury and the name
changed to the Piedmont Institute. Many Charlotteans received their formal education at one of these church
schools.

From a meager beginning the present membership is 600. Dr. J. B. Humphrey initiated the Board of
Christian Education, The Group System, and the Building Fund which has successfully purchased two and a half
acres for a future church site.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
Greetings:

"A Church, like an individual, is fortunate to have been well born. Like an in-
dividual, a church is fortunate to have been well nourished in its early years. In all
its vicissitudes through prosperity and hardships a church is fortunate to have had a
sound pattern of development." This statement can well be applied to our church.
Thus at the end of 100 years of existence, we take time out to reflect upon the past
work of our church, take stock of our present position, and to envision the future hopes,
dreams and program. We do this with a deep sense of gratitude to those in the past
who organized, nourished, and set forth a sound pattern of development and growth
as well as those officers, leaders, members and friends who are now serving and sup-
porting our church at the turn of the century. S

As your present pastor, I am happy to have been a part with you in the closing
years of our Church's 1st century of Witnessing for Christ, in the local community,
state, nation, and the world.

Now that we have reached the 100th milestone in our church's history, the chal-
lenges of the second century must be faced up to. We must accept the challenge
of the unfinished task of the church and the challenge of the changing time. To
this end, I call upon the membership of our church to rededicate itself to the task
of the church in the years to come.

We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the official boards, committees
and members who have worked very hard to make our Centennial celebration a
success.
